Is video chat free, and do I need an app?

It is free with no install. WebRTC is built into every modern browser on phone and desktop, so the camera button simply works. There is no time limit either. Text and video are one room, not two products.

Do I have to turn my camera on?

Never. Most conversation here is text, and voice only calls are common. The camera is there for when you want it. Also, anyone demanding you switch it on is someone to block, not to obey.

Can video calls be recorded?

We record nothing, and calls go directly between participants. However, any person can screen record their own device on any platform. So never show anything on camera you would not want saved. Keep the lens covered until you choose otherwise.
